![]() Very very few mechanics are good at electrical diagnosis. Its not an electronic problem its an electrical problem. And that loose connection is touching the bulbs wire when the ash tray is closed. There must be a loose connection in you cigar lighter sockets positive wire thats why there is no power when its open. The ash tray light is suppose to be on when the main light switch is on whether or not the ash tray is open or closed. Is this a fuse problem Or someone reversed the wiring This explains why my cel is not being charged when the tray is in the open position since the power is not being supplied when open which should be the opposite. The tiny light inside the compartment of the cigarette tray lights up when it is closed and the light off when the tray is completed open. ![]() My 91 300E had this problem since it was new and finally I decided to look into it when it failed to charge my cel in the car. Pull your ash tray out run your finger behind the cigarette lighter and feel for the wire attached to the back of the lighter. Pardon a dumb question but did you verify that it is still plugged in (the wire still attached to the back of the cigarette lighter) I ask because the wire on mine worked itself loose after 10 years. try a junk yard for ant real MB lighter maybe 5 dollars US. It seems the wire moves back and forth with the ash tray broke it within the insulation itself. Removed the spade connector and re-terminated. Difficult to repair as the wire is designed to take a lot of heat due to the lighter itself. It turned out to be the wire breaking just before the lighter socket. I opened the fuse box on the front passenger d ash board (on the side) and found one fuse (the top one) was blown replaced it and did not fix the problem.
